Your First Martial Arts Class

By Shaolin Martial Arts Academy · 2 Apr 2026 · 5 min read · Kandivali East, Mumbai

Walking into a dojo for the first time can feel intimidating — but it shouldn't. First classes are designed to make complete beginners feel welcome. Here's exactly what to expect so you arrive relaxed and ready.

Before class

Wear comfortable clothes you can move in for your free trial — no uniform needed yet. Arrive a few minutes early, stay hydrated, and let the instructor know it's your first class.

The warm-up

Every class starts with a warm-up — light cardio and stretching to prepare your body and prevent injury. This is a great way to ease in.

Learning the basics

You'll learn a few fundamental stances and movements. Instructors break everything down step by step, and more experienced students often help beginners. Nobody expects you to be perfect — effort is what counts.

Dojo etiquette

You'll pick up simple traditions like bowing when entering, listening quietly and showing respect to the instructor and fellow students. It becomes second nature quickly.

After class

You'll likely feel energised and accomplished. The instructor can recommend the right regular batch and answer any questions about joining.

Remember: everyone in that room started exactly where you are now. Take the first step — book a free trial.
